Lands End, a house on the tip of Sands Point, Long Island, is considered to be the house that Fitzgerald based his descriptions of Daisy and Tom Buchanan's house on. As of March, 2011, it was slated to be demolished because it was too expensive to maintain ($4,500 per day) and had fallen into disrepair. The $30 million dollar house would be too expensive to renovate as well (about $2 million).
Nick describes their house as "even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red and white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay. The lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter of a mile, jumping over sun-dials and brick walks and burning gardens - finally when it reached the house drifting up the side in bright vines as though from the momentum of its run. The front was broken by a line of French windows..." (11).
