Graphing calculators are not required for any of my classes, however, they are very beneficial for advanced math classes such as Advanced Algebra & Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics.
The only type of calculator you are allowed to use on the AP Calculus exams is a graphing calculator. Before you invest in a graphing calculator (graphing calculators cost anywhere from $50 to $250) you may want to contact the university in which you plan to attend to see if the department of your major (especially if you are interested in majoring in: engineering, math, business, or any other S.T.E.M. field) requires a particular grapher.
I do have some TI-84 Plus calculators that I will check out to AP Calculus students only for the entire school year. If you already have a graphing calculator, please check this LINK to ensure that your grapher has been approved for taking the AP Calculus AB/BC and the AP Statistics exams.
