The goal of AP Calculus classes is to give students the opportunity to earn college credit for first (AP Calculus AB) and second (AP Calculus BC) semester college calculus. I will run both classes in a manner similar to how many college Calculus classes are run. Students should expect to spend a minimum of 6 hours a week outside of class on homework and preparing for quizzes/tests. While homework will be given daily, it will not be graded for accuracy. Solutions to each assignment will be posted on Google Classroom. Your grade in Calculus will be based on in class group activities, twice weekly quizzes and unit tests. Semester exams will account for 20% of your semester grade in Calculus (see bottom of page for grade breakdowns).
Since the class has officially been given AP status, the pace of the class must stay at the pace set by the syllabus so that those students interested in taking the AP test on Monday, May 8th, 2023 will be fully prepared to do so.
It is my personal philosophy that, while this is a college level class, the "typical" high school student needs the opportunity to relearn a topic if s/he is driven to do so. I encourage students to coordinate study groups, join our class Messenger group chat to ask questions, offer help, or get timely information from me outside of the school day, and set up times during their study halls and/or after school to work in my room for one-on-one or sporadic help as needed. There will NOT be any "re-takes" on quizzes or tests (see specific details below). It is my desire to teach my students not only the importance of learning the difficult concepts of Calculus, but to also learn the importance of perseverance and improvement when a topic or concept becomes difficult.
At the end of each day, the notes presented in class will be posted on the Google Classroom page set up for this class along with a video produced by the author of the curriculum we are using. I have set up a Facebook Messenger groupchat that I administer and monitor so that students can ask questions to their classmates and/or me. Students have also been given my cell phone number and may contact me at any time. Per Lake Mills Area School District School Board Policy, I will only contact and/or reply to students via the group chat, text messages and/or email during the hours of 7 am until 10 pm.
Format of Quizzes & Tests
QUIZZES will generally be given twice a week and will be cumulative. The Monday (or Tuesday) quiz will be multiple choice and timed. The Friday (or Thursday) quiz will be a free response question and timed. The format of the quizzes will be similar to the multiple choice and free response sections of the AP exam. Retakes on quizzes will not be given, however students will be encouraged to work with me to ensure an understanding of the material before the unit test.
TESTS will be cumulative and will be modeled after both the multiple choice and "free response" sections of the AP Exam. ALL tests will be timed in accordance to the AP timing standards (see below). While retakes on tests will not be given, all students will be required to make test corrections. These corrections will not add to the test score, but will be a supplemental score.
