Stretch Algebra is a 2-year Algebra 1 course. It is designed to cover the entire Algebra 1 curriculum at a pace that is slowed down and more in-depth than a regular Algebra 1 class. Stretch Algebra is for the student who struggles with mathematics and/or needs more guidance and time to fully understand abstract algebraic concepts.
Stretch Algebra follows the Glencoe curriculum entitled "Algebra Concepts and Applications" 2-year Algebra course. These textbooks are not distributed out to students in this class, however any student who would like a copy of these textbooks may checkout them out for the school year through the LMHS Library Media Center.
Instead of using the textbooks, we will "build" a textbook together in class. Each chapter students will be given a packet of guided notes for the entire unit that will be filled in daily as we work through the chapter. Through this process, students will be taught how to take notes in a math class. At the end of each day, the SMART Board presentation given in class will be posted on the Google Classroom that is set up for this class along with a video that was previously recorded. The video & SMART Board presentation goes hand in hand with the guided notes handed out in class. Homework will always be in the form of a worksheet and will also be posted in Google Classroom.
The second year of Stretch Algebra, will pick up where the first year left off. We will cover the second entire 2nd volume of Algebra: Concepts and Applications textbook. Topics covered include:
- Chapter 8 Powers and Roots
- Chapter 9 Polynomials
- Chapter 10 Factoring
- Chapter 11 Quadratic and Exponential Functions
- Chapter 12 Inequalities
- Chapter 13 Systems of Equations and Inequalities
- Chapter 14 Radical Expressions
- Chapter 15 Rational Expressions and Equations
By the end of year 2, we not only get through both entire textbooks, we will explore multiple concepts of basic statistical analysis and probability, the trigonometric functions of sine, cosine, and tangent from Geometry, as well as elementary matrix algebra from Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus! Upon successful completion of both years of Stretch Algebra, students:
- will have earned 2 math credits,
- will have completed the state of Wisconsin's Algebra 1 graduation requirement,
- will be ready for Geometry the following year.
